Toshiba 1089 unmasked as MS's Zune

Zunefront

Well, here's a bit of a surprise: a wireless PMP just showed up on the FCC, featuring a 30GB HDD, FM tuner and a strangely familiar 3-inch screen. And it ain't being manufactured by Microsoft. Instead it looks like Microsoft got their good pal Toshiba to produce the Zune, which not only saves Microsoft the job of gearing up some production lines for the thing, but seems to keep them from stepping on at least one PlayForSure licensee's toes.

It comes with all the standard features such as movie viewing, music playback, DMB, an FM tuner, GPS navigation (with an optional cradle) and a document viewer. But what rocks most about this thing is that it supposedly supports HD quality TV out.

Archos 604 reviewed

Archos 604

Video playback is where the 604 shines. According to the specs, it's compatible with MPEG-4 ASP up to 720x480 at 30fps, AVI file container with MP4 file format, WMV9, and protected WMV. Unlike the Cowon, it's not DivX certified, and it doesn't play MPEG-2. However, many of our DivX files played without a hitch. You can also download plug-ins that will let you play H.264 and MPEG-2 files--they will be available soon at about $10 each (there's mention of AAC and AC3 support too).

Toshiba Gigabeat S MES30VW reviewed - better than iPod?

Toshiba Gigabeat S

On one hand, the unit's compact form factor, compatibility with a wide array of media formats, and high-storage capacity should appeal to early adopters. On the other hand, the easy-to-use operating system will make geniuses out of beginners. To top it off, the device is subscription enabled, and it includes niceties such as an FM tuner. Plus, it will be one of the first devices to be compatible with Starz's upcoming Vongo movie-subscription service. The Toshiba Gigabeat S doesn't record audio or video, its screen is still too small for true video enjoyment, and overall rated battery life is weaker than Toshiba had promised, but we still think it's the next great portable media device.
